Karen T. Colbert Paintings
'9th Nov. - 14th Dec. 2004 This second exhibition in the Autumn Series at Belltable Gallery opens on Tuesday 9th November at 6pm and features the work of Karen T. Colbert. Originally from Midwest USA Karen has settled in Ireland since 1993 where she lives and works in Cashel Co. Tipperary.
Colbert's work is committed to the principles and methods of Abstraction, a (if not the) major innovation of Modernism. As such, references in her work to the ways in which the everyday world appears to our sense of sight are almost entirely put aside so that feeling and emotion can be aroused and expressed through the interaction of the materials and technique, the media, and the various ways the elements of design can be made to behave.
The world her work represents is an inner, emotional world. As the artist says: "The impressions and perceptions gained through the direct experience of nature play a large role in my work. I am interested in conveying a sense of freedom, life, spontaneity, fluidity of movement, playfulness, and an expansiveness of space, as well as a sense of the present moment."
Karen T. Colbert's paintings all rely on the behaviour of the watercolour medium put down on a rag paper ground. They are of the same or similar domestic size. All are exhibited vertically though often painted otherwise. All are committed to the use of shape, pattern and full colour.
Light through, rather than light on, aptly describes how colour behaves in Colbert's painting. The effect achieved resembles somewhat that of the TV image or stained glass window, though here the shine and glow comes from the rapport she sets up between the watercolour medium and the ground of white paper. Whether set in geometric or organic patterns, the abstract shapes she favours come together in highly structured and expressive compositions: abstraction at a high degree of accomplishment.
Unusually, for the most part, the works are exhibited without frames, the better to fully understand the colour.
Colbert's university studies concluded with a Master Degree in Fine Art in 1987 and, in 1990, a special study of Sumi-e, traditional Japanese painting. She has exhibited steadily and widely since 1987 in the USA and Ireland and has placed her work in public and private collections in the USA, Ireland and Austria.'
